Re-Casting THG in progess

Based on the books' narrative, all characters from the Seam should be people of color (POC). Katniss is a woman of color (WOC) based on the narrative. Prim is whitepassing but she is also a WOC, because her father was a POC and her mother was white. There were clear racial narratives that were completely bulldozed by the casting of this movie and while it was not a complete focus of the books, it was there. The narrative that was ignored includes how Katniss herself identifies as a POC. She mentions how there is a clear difference between how people of the Seam and the Merchant class look. She goes on to further talk about how this difference results in different treatment and further oppression within the district itself. Katniss cannot pass for a merchant with pale skin because her skin is visibly and significantly darker. In book 2, there's a tribute from district 11, where Thresh and Rue were from, and Katniss comments that the skin color of this tribute was similar to that of someone from the Seam... in other words her and Gale and everyone else in the Seam, in other words people in the Seam are POC. There is just mountains of evidence in the narrative that Katniss is not white and that she is treated differently because of this. On top of that, the casting call asked for white actresses only, never giving someone with the same skin color as Katniss a chance to even audition for the role. I'll admit my first read through I completely missed it myself, but after research, it's clear to me and I personally wanted to be true to that.

I enjoy playing with movie version PBs of the characters, but I wanted to cast some of the roles with POC PBs too. :)

Peeta and her mother still works really well though Hunter Parrish would make an awesome Peeta. That's my personal preference talking, ahem.

"Suzanne Collins admitted that ethnic mixing happened in District 12 with people of the Seam. In that same interview, she said that the filmmakers had makeup to alter the appearance of the white actors. That is blackface. For a bestselling author to be so racist--even if it was unwittingly--does not make her the best authority on film production and fandom matters at large."
